Charles Darwin was a brilliant and fascinating man. After careful, detailed study, he proposed his theory of evolution through natural selection, and changed the face of science forever. Then, over the next two decades, despite persistent health problems, Darwin studied and wrote so prolifically and profoundly that he is now considered to be one of the most influential figures in human history.
The theory of evolution has its roots in Darwin's journeys around the world while sailing on the HMS Beagle. During his second voyage, Darwin collected a group of about 15 birds on the Galapagos Islands. The birds had similarities, but also exhibited variations in appearance, which eventually led him to write that "Seeing this gradation and diversity of structure in one small, intimately related group of birds, one might really fancy that from an original paucity of birds in this archipelago, one species had been taken and modified for different ends."
In 1837, Darwin sketched his initial evolutionary tree, with the nearby note, "I think case must be that one generation should have as many living as now. To do this and to have as many species in same genus (as is) requires extinction." Over 150 years later, the concept of an evolutionary tree is still used to depict evolution and speciation.
In honor of Darwin, evolution, and the fascinating study of life, we have created a beautiful, unique pendant that displays the first evolutionary tree on one side, and Darwin's Finches on the other. Using hand-weathered pewter and glass, the pendant measures a bit over 1 inch in diameter and hangs on a steel chain. You may choose the chain length: long (24" - good for wearing over shirts and sweaters), or short (18" - good for showing off the pendant on the chest). The pendant is water-resistant, but not water-proof, so do take it off before diving in the Galapagos.
